Sobia Nazir’s collection at Dubai Fashion Week was at once feminine, floaty and glamorous.
Kicking off her show with modern pieces including a one-shouldered opaque mustard kaftan and a psychedelic print mini dress, she quickly segued into more traditional Pakistani dress shapes.
The collection went through an arc of colour from muted pastels embossed with bright floral embroidery to hot pinks and corals, golds and neutrals and finally blacks and scarlets.
Tying the whole show together were a series of jewelled, net head pieces with flower corsages and Nazir’s exquisite trademark embroidery and jewel detailing, which climaxed in a patina of gold and silver adornments.

Mariam Al Mazro’s demurely shaped but flamboyantly patterned ankle-length dresses for her Mimi label shifted the focus of Dubai Fashion Week from adornments to prints.
Geometrics, florals, stripes, paisleys, spots and even tartans appeared together in a sophisticated patchwork occasionally juxtaposed against plain fabrics.
Silk and chiffon worked in tandem to create a floaty silhouette which was further enhanced by panels of extra material at the side and base of the skirts. Billowing sleeves added to the diaphanous effect.
High collars and more fitted cuts hinted at an oriental influence.

Walid Atallah proved once again why he is one of the Gulf’s foremost designers with a show that drew spontaneous applause throughout when it brought day one of Dubai Fashion Week to a close.
Packing a capacity crowd, guests were treated to an eveningwear spectacle that combined the romance of a fairytale ball with the drama of “Gone With the Wind”.
It opened with a show-stopping ruched gold net jacket infused with sparkles worn over a purple fantail dress. And it ended with similar impact, showcasing three opulent bridal gowns with two-metre trains.
In between, Atallah’s styling focused on layered – often crinoline – skirts and tight bodices in sheer net, with sequins and glittering embroidery hiding the models’ curves.
His expert tailoring skills were everywhere, from the precise, diamond-shaped and crystal-edged folds on the train of a wedding dress to the scalloped edging of the full skirts.
And when the models joined Atallah on the stage at the end of the show, the catwalk was awash with the golds and scarlets, black, mochas and purples of the collection’s palette.
